Build and Conquer Beginner Mistakes: Diagnose Your First City
Build and Conquer Beginner Mistakes: Diagnose Your First City. Explore the recorded conditions, dated sources and practical next steps.
What mistakes can you diagnose from a visible condition?
| Symptom | Evidence-backed check | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Cannot place a utility | Substation’s red error asks for a road within 4 studs | Move its preview nearer an eligible road |
| A substation provides no useful connection | In-game tutorial says it must receive power before relaying its own circle | Check overlap with existing power coverage |
| Total population seems high enough | Level-2 house tooltip also asks for residents in houses | Read each population category separately |
| Income looks healthy but spending still stalls | Finances subtract upkeep; build tooltips list material inputs separately | Check net pay and stored resources |

Why is building another copy not always the next step?
The Oil Pump panel in the same recording needs 4 workers, water and 20 energy. A second pump adds the same listed demand; it does not fix an unsupported first pump. Likewise, another substation has an upkeep cost and a placement condition. Diagnose one selected building while keeping the rest of the district unchanged, then expand only after the condition is satisfied.
This is a diagnostic method, not a claimed optimal speedrun. Some old tutorials discuss 250 residents for level 2 while a later house tooltip shows 500 total and 300 in houses. Copying only a spoken number can send you toward the wrong counter. The next upgrade should be planned from the condition visible in your current game.
Which tempting shortcuts remain unverified?
Do not assume Undo refunds everything, deleting housing preserves all benefits, or reconnecting restores an unfinished purchase. Those persistence and refund behaviors were not established by the inspected frames. Keep a reserve and try a small reversible layout adjustment before deleting an entire district.
Where should you go next?
